WHAT IS MASSAGE THERAPY?

Massage is the manipulation of the superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue (fascia) to enhance the function of the physical body, to relieve pain and built-up tension, as well as promote relaxation and well-being. As an accepted part of physical rehabilitation programs, massage has proven beneficial for many chronic conditions and helps relieve the stress and tension of everyday living that can lead to disease and illness. Various modalities, techniques and tools are being integrated to provide you with the most effective outcomes. These can include e.g. Trigger Points and Reflexology.

DEEP TISSUE / INJURY RECOVERY

Deep Tissue Massage is used to target knots and release chronic muscle tension & pain as well as assists in injury rehabilitation. It is also beneficial for reducing inflammation and to help eliminate scar tissue. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons, and fascia.

Deep Tissue is a massage using slower strokes, thumbs, forearms, and elbows to help release the chronic patterns of the muscular tension. Unlike Swedish (Relaxation) Massage where the strokes go with the muscle fibers, Deep Tissue also uses strokes across muscle fibers, i.e. cross fiber friction where necessary. The more intense movements and techniques such as deeper finger & forearm / elbow pressure may be slightly uncomfortable and can cause some soreness that lasts a day or two before resulting in the desired relaxation and pain relief. This treatment requires some of your participation and communication to indicate the presence and intensity of pain and discomfort and will be performed according to your comfort level for best results and relief.

SWEDISH MASSAGE / RELAXATION

Swedish Massage was originally developed in Stockholm a couple of centuries ago and is the most common and best-known type of bodywork performed today.

The goal is to relax the entire body, to feel more connected, and to reduce physical and emotional stress. This is accomplished through a soothing style of massage that creates a sense of relaxation and renewed energy. The techniques incorporate rubbing the muscles with long, gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart, circular pressure applied by hands, palms, and forearms, firm kneading, and stretching.

Swedish Massage is exceptional for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing, muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility while easing tension and boosting the immune system.

Upon request, hot stones can be integrated into this treatment for small additional charge.

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE / CUPPING

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a safe and very effective technique that assists in eliminating restrictions & pain in the connective tissue, thus elongating the fascia and as a result restores motion.

Fascia is a thin tissue that covers all the organs of the body as one continuous sheet. This tissue covers every muscle and fiber within each muscle. When muscle fibers are injured, the fibers and the fascia become short and tight. This uneven stress can be transmitted through the fascia to other parts of the body, causing pain and a variety of symptoms in areas we often would not expect. MFR treats these symptoms by releasing the uneven tightness in injured or stressed fascia.

MFR is the stretching of the fascia which is guided by your body’s responses. MFR is not massage but used to equalize muscle tension throughout the body. Unequal muscle tension can compress nerves and muscles causing pain. Progress is measured by a decrease in your pain level and by an improvement in overall posture.

MFR can be done either manually through gentle fascia stretches or through the use of cupping which have proven highly effective in obtaining results even faster. The cups are used either through placement (stationary) or through movement across the fascia. This technique can be part of injury rehab or a Deep Tissue massage depending on your specific needs and requests.

Massage during pregnancy is beneficial in reducing stress and promoting general well-being. It stimulates the lymphatic system, removes excess toxins and strengthens the immune system. It stabilizes hormonal levels, as hormonal changes can cause depression and anxiety during pregnancy, which is why many expecting mothers find relief with a Prenatal Massage.

Many benefits of massage include the relief of normal discomforts experiences during pregnancy, such as hip and backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches, joint pain, and edema. In addition, by relaxing nervous tension, you can experience a better night’s sleep.

It also helps prepare the expectant mother for labor by increasing the flexibility of the ligaments, tendons, and joints while supporting body awareness. Your baby feels what you feel and shares your experience of the pregnancy.

Special bolstering is used to ensure your comfort & safety while the massage is accustomed to your special needs, to promote relaxation and relief from aching muscles.

When to Avoid Prenatal Massage:

Women with normal and low-risk pregnancies can benefit greatly from massage. However, women in high-risk pregnancies should consult with their doctor before receiving massages. If at any time during the massage you experience discomfort, please let the therapist know immediately.
